Putnam County Sheriff Capt. Lisa Ortolano announced the arrests of Wingdale residents Matthew Sehrt, 28 and Cynthia Gilroy, 27, who were caught red-handed attempting to steal merchandise from ShopRite on Route 52 in Carmel.

Officials said that a loss prevention agent spotted Sehrt placing merchandise into Gilroy’s purse, before the pair left the store without paying for any items. The two were stopped by the agent, who brought them back to the security office without further incident before alerting law enforcement.

Both Sehrt and Gilroy were arrested and charged with individual counts of petit larceny and sixth-degree conspiracy. Following arraignment in the Town of Kent Justice Court, both were released on their own recognizance. They are both due in the Town of Carmel Court later this year to answer the charges.
