More than 30 arrests were made Thursday during a wide-ranging drug sweep throughout New Rochelle.

The arrests come on the heels of two months-long investigations into the sale of cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin. The investigations, dubbed “Operation Birdcage” and “Operation Fresh Start” identified 50 individuals who allegedly conspired to sell narcotics in New Rochelle.

The sweep was conducted on Thursday morning with officers from the New Rochelle Police Department, FBI, DEA and Westchester County Department of Public Safety. As of Thursday afternoon, 36 people were in custody, with officers continuing to search for the remaining suspects.

According to New Rochelle Police Capt. Robert Gazzola, those arrested as part of “Operation Birdcage” have been charged as a result of New York State Grand Jury Indictments; while those arrested as part of “Operation Fresh Start” have been charged as a result of Federal Indictments.

The story is a developing story. More information is expected from United State Attorney Joon Kim’s office later in the day. Check back to Daily Voice for updates.
