NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Purdys resident William Geller, the pedestrian who was struck by a car on Route 22 in North Salem Friday afternoon, died Friday night after being transported to Danbury Hospital’s Trauma Center, New York State Police said.

The accident occurred around 2:45 p.m. Friday, when Richard Bertram, an 88-year-old Somers resident, struck Geller with his 2005 Chevrolet Impala.

Geller, 47, was walking north on the northbound side of Route 22 on the roadway’s edge with his back to traffic, police said.

Bertram, traveling north as well, was rounding a curve in the roadway when he struck Geller from the rear, police said.

Croton Falls Volunteer Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene and found Geller with no pulse. Emergency workers were able to restore his pulse and rush him to the hospital, police said.

The New York State Police also responded to the scene, along with the North Salem Police.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is requested to contact investigator James Stirple with the State Police Somers Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 914-277-3651.

i am in the process of petioning for people over the age 0f 70 to get thouroughly
checked before getting behing the wheel!! i simply am mortified and angry, just cannot help my feelings that this 88 year old man took my young brother's life.. !!! i will never get over this, so hard to move on...

This was 2:45pm.
Darkness was not the issue. Driver age was the issue. 88!
When will we start requiring seniors to pass ability tests in order to renew their license? It's not discriminatory, it's a fact that sight and reflexes diminish with age.

Please be careful when out walking. Please take careful note of the following. [Geller, 47, was walking north on the northbound side of Route 22 on the roadway’s edge with his back to traffic, police said.]
[Bertram, traveling north as well, was rounding a curve in the roadway when he struck Geller from the rear, police said. ]
When out walking at night please wear some light reflective clothing ot reflective strips.. Too many times I see people out waking after dark dressed all in black or dark clothing.

first of all you have all the incorrect information... if you read the article and pay attention, it was broad daylight at 3pm in the afternoon!!!! the curve was
barely a curve, as you can see from the pics it was a pretty straight drive were anyone with good eyesight and reflexes should of seen this person!! bottom line anyone over the age of 70 years should be tested thouroughly before getting behind the wheel!!! this was my baby brother who i am grieving over terribly!!!!!!i drove this road 10 times, this was no "rounding of a curve" it maybe was a minute bend!
