Putnam County Sherif’s Department Timothy Keith, a supervisor in the Patrol Division and a K-9 handler, was among 228 law enforcement officials hailing from 47 states and the District of Columbia, 24 foreign nations, five branches of the United States military and seven federal civilian agencies who attended the 268th session of the Academy, according to the FBI.

The FBI National Academy is a 10-week program of leadership and fitness training.

“Admission to the Academy is highly selective, with candidates nominated by their agencies to attend based upon the officer’s proven record of law enforcement service,” Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith noted. “Less than 1 percent of America’s law enforcement officials, and an even smaller percentage of nominees applying from other countries are selected to attempt the program.”

In more than 75 years, the Academy has turned out approximately 50,000 graduates.

Smith noted that training for the program is provided by FBI Academy staff, special agents and instructors holding advanced degrees, many of whom are recognized internationally as experts in their field

Keith isn’t the first member of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, joining 10 other active members of the department who have graduated from the academy.

“I know I speak for all of Sergeant Keith’s colleagues here in the Sheriff’s Office when I say how very proud we are of him for his years of distinguished service and for this, his most recent accomplishment, his graduation from the FBI National Academy,” Smith stated.

“Education and training are the vital lifeblood of any strong organization, and I know Sgt. Keith will put the outstanding National Academy training to good work for the citizens of Putnam County as he carries out his important duties each and every day.”
