Teen Arrested Twice In Same Day Following Burglary Report In Putnam

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- Putnam County Sheriff's deputies arrested the same man twice in one day, once following a traffic stop, and again after he called the department regarding a burglary, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

The first arrest came after a speeding stop on Route 9D in Philipstown.

Kyle B. Hetman, 18, of Fort Montgomery, was first stopped for speeding around 8:45 a.m. Wednesday on Route 9D in the Town of Philipstown, police said.

During the stop, Deputy Benjamin Levine detected the odor of marijuana coming from the interior of the vehicle and saw evidence of marijuana usage inside the car, police said.

An investigation revealed that Hetman was in possession of a quantity of marijuana. Levine arrested Hetman for unlawful possession of marijuana and released him on his own recognizance, police said.

A few hours later, Hetman made a report to the Sheriff’s Department about a burglary in progress at a residence in the Town of Philipstown. Hetman told officers that earlier that morning, while acting as the caretaker of the residence of a friend, he encountered a man inside the home, police said.

Hetman told officers that the man assaulted him in the residence and then fled into surrounding woods. Prompted by this report, many area law enforcement agencies, including the PCSD, New York State Police, Village of Cold Spring Police Department, MTA Police and Westchester County Police responded to the area and assisted in the initial investigation, police added.

Police K9 units and a police helicopter were dispatched to the scene in an attempt to locate the alleged suspect. The efforts of all agencies were unsuccessful in locating the subject. At the request of Sheriff’s Department investigators, Hetman drove himself to Sheriff's headquarters in Carmel for a further interview. After being questioned about inconsistencies in his story, Hetman admitted to having made-up the story, police said.

He was arrested for the second time and charged with falsely reporting an incident and with making a false punishable written statement, police reported.

He was again released on his own recognizance pending a court date of Dec. 13.

If found guilty of the misdemeanor charges, he could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.00 for each charge.
