Comment Period Opens For Somers Off-site Contamination

SOMERS, N.Y. – The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) plans to conduct remedial site work on an undeveloped, mainly wooded tract that abuts the Amawalk Reservoir on the east and the boundary of the proposed Granite Pointe subdivision on the west.

The Granite Pointe subdivision comprises approximately 28 acres and is slated for the development of single-family houses.

The 4.7 acres are classified as contaminated because of lead concentrations found in the soil. From 1938 to 1968, the tract was used for target and trap shooting. Reservoir water samples have shown no evidence of lead, however.

Plans for the cleanup include excavation and off-site disposal of affected soil, backfilling with clean fill, establishing appropriate grading, and establishing erosion controls and proper soil depths to support re-vegetation of the disturbed areas.

The NYSDEC is currently accepting public comments on the proposal. The cut-off date is January 31, 2013.

Further information and project documents can be found at the Somers Public Library, 80 Primrose St., Somers (914) 232-5717. Or, you can request an appointment at the NYSDEC Region 3 Office, 21 South Putt Corners Road, New Paltz, NY 12561. The phone number is (845) 256-3154.
