SOMERS, N.Y. The Somers Democratic Committee has nominated George Dieter to run for a Town Board seat in Novembers special election. The seat was vacated in March when Harry Bolton resigned for health reasons. Richard Benedict, president of the Heritage Hills Society, was appointed a temporary board member until a special election could be held in the fall. Winner of the fall election will serve out the remainder of Boltons term, which expires in 2013.
George Dieter is a veteran councilman, having served on the board from 2006 to 2009. He has also been a member of the Conservation Board and the Planning Board. In addition, from 1994 to 2000 he served on the Somers School Board.
I enjoy giving back to the community, said Dieter. Somers is a good place to live. Ive had some experience working out problems in government and in the private sector. Ive been there before so I feel I have something to contribute.
Dieter said one of his first priorities as a board member would be to establish a 5 to 10-year plan for the town. We have a lot of infrastructure that needs periodic maintenance and repairs. Our revenue is short and we have to find ways to maintain the infrastructure without unduly burdening the taxpayer.
We can be innovative in how we do repairs. For example, right now we hire a plumber when we need one today, and then again tomorrow. We should have a fixed contract. It would save money in the long run.
A graduate of St. Johns University Law School, Dieter is admitted to the Bars of New York State, the Federal District and the Supreme Court. He has a long career as a trial attorney, and is employed at a major insurance company, where he specializes in cases involving negligence.
Dieter has three grown children. His major joy is visiting them whenever he has the time.
