Voters Head To Polls For Congressional Primaries In 18th, 19th Districts

It is Primary Day in New York on Tuesday as the 18th and 19th Congressional districts will be holding primaries to decide challengers for the general election.

The 18th district features a primary between Republicans Phil Olivia, a Somers resident and Ken Del Vecchio, an Orange County resident, for the right to challenge Democratic incumbent Sean Patrick Maloney.

The 18th district includes all of Putnam and Orange counties and parts of southern Dutchess and northeastern Westchester. 

Oliva, who is communications director for Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, is considered the frontrunner, having received endorsements from the Republican and Conservative parties. 

Oliva has demanded that Maloney turn over tapes shot by a tracker who was hired by the state Democrats. The tracker, Yougourthen Ayouni, contacted Oliva's wife, Jessica on Facebook and visited the Oliva’s residence several times, once startling her by peering through a kitchen window. Ayouni has since been fired.

In the 19th district, Republican and Democratic primaries are being held to determine who will replace Republican Chris Gibson, who is not running for re-election.

John Faso, who unsuccessfully ran on the Republican ticket for governor in 2006, faces Andrew Heany, a Washington resident. Faso, a Columbia County resident. has been endorsed by the Republican and Conservative parties and is considered the frontrunner.

Zephyr Teachout, who primaried Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2014, is facing Will Yandik, a Columbia County resident. Teachout, a Dover Plains resident, is considered the frontrunner in the race.

The 19th Congressional District covers part of Dutchess, Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan, and Ulster counties, and a portion of Broome, Montgomery and Rensselaer counties.
