Driver Charged After Parking on Greenwich Sidewalk

A Riverside man was arrested on drunken-driving charges last week after he was found asleep in his car, while it was parked on the sidewalk on East Putnam Avenue.

John S. Thorne, 71, of 3 Wallasy Way, was awakened and failed field sobriety tests. Thorne was arrested on charges of operating under the influence and unsafe movement. He was released on $250 bond and is due in court Thursday.

Also from the Greenwich police blotter:

• A Danbury man was arrested in Greenwich on Thursday on larceny charges after going into an unlocked car in a driveway. Robert Edward Kapple, 25, was stopped in his black Volvo station wagon on Mallard Drive. Police found he had gone onto the property of 25 Mallard Drive knowing he didn’t have permission from the homeowners. While on the property, he opened an unlocked door of a car. He was arrested on charges of criminal attempt at larceny and simple trespass. Kapple, of 7 Nicholas St., was released on a promise to appear in court April 1.

• A Greenwich teen was arrested last week after allegedly climbing onto the roof of a car and punching the window of another car, with the car’s owner in sight. He was issued a misdemeanor summons and is due in court April 5.

• Jeffrey Stempien, 55, of 29 Richard St., Greenwich, was arrested Friday on charges of breach of peace and criminal mischief after arguing with a neighbor earlier in March. In another incident, he backed his car into the neighbor’s driveway and shook the neighbor’s fence, causing it to buckle, police said. He was released on a promise to appear in court.
