Students Start Classes at Blind Brook Schools

RYE BROOK, N.Y. -- Jennifer Kohn picked up her son Joe after his first day of fourth grade amidst a throng of children hiding from the rain under Rye Ridge School's covered front entrance.

"Well, it was better than I expected," said Joe, 9, of his first day.

Schools in the Blind Brook district opened their doors Tuesday to welcome students back from summer vacation. Joe was a little hesitant to sit back in the classroom and the dreary weather wasn't helping. However, in the end he enjoyed himself.

Joe came to school with a brand new pair of sneakers and a Syracuse orange backpack to support his favorite college basketball team. "We didn't even write his name on it because we knew he would be the only one to have it," said his mother.

Recess was rained out, so he couldn't go out to play basketball, but he still had fun playing computer games in the classroom.

Although Joe wished there were more boys in his class he said he was happy to find his friend Dean, who he hadn't seen since the previous school year ended and they went to separate summer camps. Both of them had picked out the same sneakers. "It's nice to see them with the kids they grew up with," said Kohn.
