Bedford Board Awaits Recount With Incumbents Ahead

BEDFORD, NY—Bedford will have to wait to find out who will be chosen for the Town Board, as there will be recounts in the district due to defective voting machines.

At least three machines in Bedford have been labeled defective and were impounded, said Janet Harckham, wife of Peter Harckham, county legislative candidate.

Incumbents Chris Burdick (D-WF-IN) and David Gabrielson (D) led in the voting. According to the unofficial election results, Burdick had a 41 percent of the votes while Gabrielson was in second with 31 percent.

First-time candidate Luke Vander Linden (R-C) trailed the incumbents, with 28 percent of the votes. As of 12:50 AM, 72 percent of the votes in Bedford had been counted.

Supervisor Lee V.A. Roberts and Town Justice Kevin J. Quaranta both ran unopposed and are in line to regain their seats even with the recount. Burdick and Gabrielson said they were pleased with the early results, though all of them were not yet tallied.

“The results aren’t totally in, but the trends look very good,” said Gabrielson. “It’s incredibly gratifying that the people in Bedford have recognized the job that Chris and I have done.”

Burdick echoed his fellow incumbent’s response, adding their campaign was a strong one.

“What we were criticized about was one of the things we saw as a strength,” Burdick explained. “Even though we have three Republicans and two Democrats on the town board, we worked hard to find common ground. I think that speaks volumes about Bedford, because that is what Bedford wants to see.”

Vander Linden is hoping for a turnaround once the numbers come in, but also noted that only then will he and the rest of the candidates find closure.

“I think I’m feeling uncertain. The one thing I was hoping wouldn’t happen would be that we don't know,” he said. “We’ll all go to bed with uncertainty, but they should be able to count fairly quickly and then we’ll know.”
