Officer Jared Shatkin pulled over the rented black Dodge Charger on southbound Route 17 around 11:15 last night.

The driver, 31-year-old Jeremy Evans of South Chesterfield, Va., opened his wallet and displayed a badge that said “Special Officer Commonweath of Virginia,” Detective James LaPreta told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Shatkin and fellow Officer James LaVigna.also noticed a large amount of cash sticking out from below the vehicle’s CD player, he said.

Evans (top in photo above) also appeared nervous, DePreta said: “His hands were shaking to the point that he couldn’t hold open his wallet.”

After he told them he was a police officer, Shatkin requested a photo ID, which the detective said Evans didn’t have.

Meanwhile, LaVigna was getting vague answers from the passenger, identified as 27-year-old Micheal Morris of Richmond.

Suspecting a gun was in the car, Shatkin got consent from Evans to search it. He found a loaded and unholstered Glock Model 22 .40-caliber handgun in a police-issue jump bag on the rear seat, DePreta said.

It was loaded with 15 hollow-point bullets, he said.

Officials in Richmond had no record of Evans ever being employed as a public servant in their city, the detective said.

His driver’s license also was suspended, he said.

The gun, bullets, badge and bag were all seized as evidence, as was $689 in small denominations wrapped in rubber bands, DePreta said. An investigation was continuing, he said.

Evans, meanwhile, was being held on $62,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with impersonating a police officer, possession of the gun without a permit, possession of the illegal ammo and possession of an assault weapon.

Morris was charged with the same weapons and ammunition offenses. He was being held on $60,000 bail.
