SOMERS, N.Y. - Friends, family and fellow students of Maureen McAvoy will be pitted against each other in the Fifth Annual celebration of Maureens Hoops for Hope on December 17 at Kennedy High School .
Maureen was a member of the Kennedy Class of 2006. In October 2007 she died after a long and brave battle against brain cancer. Among the tournaments organizers is Maureens sister, Siobhan, a 2007 graduate of Kennedy. Its been five years since my sister died, and not a day goes by that I dont think of her and miss her dearly, said Siobhan. But to know that those same five years later, her friends and family are still coming together to make a difference in the fight against childhood cancer is comforting.
Teams of Kennedy alumni and faculty will join her family and friends in the five-on-five tournament. Food and other refreshments will be plentiful and T-shirts will be sold. A 50-50 raffle will add another dimension.
The suggested admission price is $7 at the door. All proceeds will be donated to childhood brain tumor research at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
The game is on in the gym at Kennedy High from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday the 17th of December. Go and shoot some hoops, or just go and cheer -- in memory of Maureen.
