Meyer, D’Anna Win School Board Seats; Somers Budget OK'd

SOMERS, N.Y. -- Incumbent Sarena Meyer, vice president of the Somers Board of Education, was re-elected by voters in Tuesday’s election. Newcomer Michael D’Anna defeated Richard Wagner for the other available seat.

A school budget totaling $81,334,171 was approved by residents in a vote of 1,478 to 681. The budget keeps within the state’s mandated 2 percent tax levy cap.

For the school board, D’Anna received a total of 1,370 votes; Meyer, 1,296; and Wagner, 1,008.

Meyer has been active in multiple educational organizations, including IBM’s Educational Outreach program, the Somers Education Foundation and Destination Imagination. She is a single parent with one son about to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy and two daughters in the Somers public schools.

“I am so very pleased that the budget passed so resoundingly and feel truly honored that voters chose to re-elect me to serve for another term,” said Meyer. “I am also very enthusiastic that next year's board will include Michael D’Anna, as I believe he is intelligent, insightful and genuine in his desire to serve our school district.”

D’Anna hopes to use his professional background in finance and accounting to assist the board with its fiscal issues, especially those incurred in the current economic climate. A Somers resident for seven years, he has two children in the Somers school district. D’Anna is a member of the Somers Education Foundation.

“I want to first thank everyone who came out in the rain yesterday in support of our schools, with close to 70% voting to pass the budget, as well as electing me as a new member of the Board of Education,” said D’Anna. “I would also like to acknowledge Richard Wagner for his dedication and enthusiasm, and congratulate Serena Meyer for winning yet another term on the Board."
