After walking the red carpet at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School, students were greeted by a life-size copy of the book "City of Ember."
About 1,400 students and 150 staff members will read the book as an effort to promote literacy.
Cartwright read an excerpt from Chapter 1 and also talked about the importance of technology in today’s society.
Each student and staff member received a copy of the book which they will read independently during the month of January.
