Putnam/Northern Westchester Boces Students Win Medals At Skills USA

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- Career and Technical Education students from Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES took home 17 medals from the Skills USA Area Four competition at Rockland Community College, the most awards received by any school.

The competition, which took place Tuesday, Jan. 13, drew more than 200 students from Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess and Sullivan counties and featured events in 18 categories.

Working against the clock in a set timeframe, students completed tasks ranging from performing first aid to servicing a car to wiring residential electric service. The regional contest is a preliminary for the New York State Skills USA competition held later in the spring.

Twenty-nine students from the Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES Tech Center competed in events that tested skills or related academic knowledge, and took home the greatest number of awards of any school in the competition.

The following students received first place honors: Mark Alexander, Auto Maintenance, Mahopac; Amanda DellaCamera, First Aid/CPR, Mahopac; Morgan Forde, job demonstration (electricity), Yorktown; Jessica Grossman, job demonstration (fashion), Lakeland; Logan Peters, residential wiring, Yorktown; and Zachary Sandground, culinary arts, Lakeland.

Second place honors went to: Anna Burholt, digital cinema, Croton Harmon; Astrella Dacosta, digital cinema, Croton-Harmon; Shaimaa Hassan, job demonstration (nursing), Yorktown; Michael Jones, extemporaneous speech, Briarcliff; and Liam O’Leary, residential wiring, Putnam Valley.

The following students placed third in the competition: Stephen Marques, automotive, Walter Panas High School, Lakeland; Nikita Morrison, extemporaneous speech, Carmel; Briana Muranelli, cosmetology, Ossining; Karina Pena, First Aid/CPR, Mahopac; Samantha Stretz, criminal justice, Lakeland; and Christina Sullivan, technical math, Mahopac.
