SOMERS, N.Y. – Six students at Somers High School were named to the list of finalists competing for the 2013 National Merit Scholarships.

The students are Jemmin Chang, Daniel Harwood, Bryan Poellot, Alicia Wu, Ruina Zhang and Simon Zheng. All six made it through the semifinal round, where 16,000 students were narrowed down to 8,300.

This is the 58th anniversary of the competition, which begins when roughly 1.5 million high school juniors from more than 22,000 schools nationwide take a preliminary examination. The semifinalists, approximately 16,000 in total, represent less than one percent of high school students.

The finalists will receive a total of $32 million, donated by hundreds of corporations and business organizations.
