SOMERS, N.Y. -- Students Taking Action Today Club (STAT), a Somers High School social action group that donates to local charities and has a global outreach in La Carpio, Costa Rica, is hosting a Hunger Banquet.
The banquet will take place at 6 p.m. Jan. 30 at Somers High School. A Hunger Banquet is a meal the club will be preparing with help from Lucia's restaurant in Bedford where they will split people by correct world ratios into income ranges: high, middle and low. Each category will receive a meal that a person in that class would normally eat. So there will be people eating a delicious, abundant meal of pasta next to someone eating a tiny cup of rice with their fingers.
The goal is to get people to share with each other, as well as to raise awareness of the conditions people experience in developing areas like La Carpio. The cost of this event is $5 per person and all the proceeds will go to La Carpio. Recently, the STAT club won the first round of the Charity Champions competition and it will be presented with the prize of $1,500 at the event. To help the club aid La Carpio and win the grand prize of an additional $5,000, please come to the banquet and show your support.
