SOMERS, N.Y. – Students of Somers’ Kennedy Catholic High School collected and donated more that 1,200 perishable items and roughly $3,200 in relief funds in support of Staten Island’s Hurricane Sandy victims.
Funds and food items were amassed through the efforts of the Kennedy Student Government and were delivered in person just before Thanksgiving to the Staten Island Veterans of Foreign Wars drop-off site and to St. Joseph-by-the-Sea. The Kennedy student representatives were seniors Gabrielle D’Amato, Shannon Spillane, Natalie Burke, Ryan Empson and John Brabazon.
“We thank you very deeply for all the hard work that your students have done on behalf of the people of Staten Island,” said the Rev. Michael Reilly, principal of St. Joseph-by-the-Sea. “This will go a long way toward helping them.”
Kennedy Principal Father Mark Vaillancourt, who accompanied the students, said, “Thanksgiving is a compound word. For every person giving thanks, there is someone else thankfully giving.”
