Somers' Primrose Playground Is Built in a Day

SOMERS, N.Y. – After nearly a year of fund-raising events, including concerts, costume parties, pajama parties and generous donations from local businesses, organizations and individual parents, the new Primrose School Playground has materialized – practically overnight.

Beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday nearly 100 volunteers employed their screwdrivers, drills, hammers and mechanical know-how and worked in half-day or all-day shifts, assembling the playground pieces under the direction of two onsite foremen from BCI Burke Co,, manufacturers of the equipment.

Food and drinks were provided throughout the day by Somers Hot Bagels, the Quaker Hill Tavern, Taste, Patsy’s Pizza, Chili’s, Pepsi and Mancini Realty, plus homemade goodies dropped off by Primrose parents.

The Milohnic/Aakjar family, owners of P.M. Pole Line Contractors, donated the use of heavy duty equipment to speed up the construction process, and spare some sore backs. Lee and Lawton Adams supplied ground fabric and cement for ground surfaces.

Primrose Custodian, Scott Legato, played a leading role in keeping things moving and, as always, many members of the Somers Lions Club were on hand to provide physical and moral support. Ninety percent of the construction work was completed in a single day.

Although a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held when school reopens in the fall, the playground will be available for summertime activities in about a week.

“We raised approximately $90,000 to cover costs,” said Vicki Durso of the Primrose Playground Committee. “We’d like to thank the families of Somers for attending multiple fundraisers and making various monetary and raffle prize donations. Everyone was so generous with the donations and support.”

Speaking of the numerous hard-working volunteers on Saturday, Durso said, “The teams were amazing. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful community.”
