SOMERS, N.Y. Somers High School senior Dylan Leggio, 17, was the victim of an Internet error on Friday when Vassar College incorrectly posted a list of students who had been accepted for early decision admission.
"Of course, this was an unfortunate mistake and we feel badly for Dylan. However, given the type of student and person that he is, were sure that he will find great success in his college search," said Scott Persampieri, Somers High School spokesperson.
There were 254 applicants in the early decision group, according to the Vassar website. Of these, 122 logged onto the website on Friday to see if they had been accepted and 76 applicants were misinformed of their acceptance due to a computer error. The other 46 applicants did receive correct acceptance letters.
The website was corrected within a couple of hours and all of the students who were erroneously informed of their acceptance received emailed apologies from the college.
Vassar College President Catharine Hill explained in a statement that the admission committee spends several months deliberating over applications, so it was ironic that the procedure went awry at the last minute. She said the college very much regrets having added to the overall stress of college application for the students and families involved.
Vassar College said it received 7,985 applications for its 2011 fall semester. Of these, 671 were accepted, which is equivalent to less than 9 percent, or fewer than one-in-12 applicants.
