SOMERS, N.Y. -- State Sen. Greg Ball (R,C,I-Patterson) gave Somers High School Salutatorian Ruina Zhang the New York State Youth Leadership Recognition Award this week.
The Youth Leadership Recognition Award Program is designed to "highlight and congratulate well-rounded students who excel academically and have exhibited leadership through extracurricular or volunteer activities," according to a press release from Ball's office. Zhang was one of seven students from throughout Ball’s district to receive the award.
“Ruina has truly showed me what it is like to overcome adversity," Ball said in the release. "She came to this country and within two years not only learned the language but was in AP English classes. I commend her for her dedication to her academics, community, and school. I wish her the best of luck in her future."
Ball also saluted Zhang for her volunteer efforts, such as organizing pajama drives, donating money and working with Costa Rican girls during the summer, according to the release. Zhang is also the co-president of Students Taking Action Today Club, the co-captain of the Girls Varsity Tennis Team, the resource officer of the Somers math team and editor of the school newspaper at Somers High School.
