Somers Students Celebrate Holidays With Ugly Sweaters And 'Groutfits'

SOMERS, N.Y. -- The holidays are nearly upon us, and Somers High School is hosting Holiday Spirit Week beginning next Friday, giving students an opportunity to be creative -- and raise money for charity.

Here's the five days of holiday themes:

  • Friday, Dec. 16, is Candy Cane Day -- so wear your Somers red and white.
  • Monday is Pajama Day.
  • Tuesday is Groutfit Day. For the uninformed, Urban Dictionary defines a groutfit as "an outfit made completely of gray; a gray top and gray bottoms." You know, in contrast to a "bloutfit," where everything's blue, or a "blackout," where it's all black.
  • Wednesday's theme is "Baby It's Cold Outside!" so bring your best bundling-up components.
  • And Thursday is Ugly Sweater Day. Teens may need to raid parents' closets for this one, or bring some patronage to Goodwill or another thrift store, to really pull this one off.

For the last component of Holiday Spirit Week, the school queries, "Do you want to build a snowman?" Students are encouraged to bring $1, to add to their classrooms' snowmen.

"The class with the biggest snowflake gets to donate all funds collected to the charity of their choice," organizers note.
