SOMERS, N.Y. – Six students at Somers High School have been named to the list of semifinalists competing for the 2013 National Merit Scholarships. The students are Jemmin Chang, Daniel Harwood, Bryan Poellot, Alicia Wu, Ruina Zhang and Simon Zheng.

This is the 58th anniversary of the competition, which begins when roughly 1.5 million high school juniors from more than 22,000 schools nationwide take a preliminary examination. The semifinalists, approximately 16,000 in total, represent less than one percent of high school students.

There will be approximately 8,300 finalists when the results are announced in the spring of 2013. The finalists will receive a total of $32 million, donated by hundreds of corporations and business organizations.
