“We’re the PTA of the kids’ sports programs,” said Booster Club President Chris Ward. “We help all sports teams and all sports programs, and we pay for things the school budget can’t afford, especially now, with the cutbacks.”

The club's most recent project is to raise funds for a scoreboard at the high school baseball field. In addition to the comedy night, funds are being raised by raffling off an iPad on Feb. 9, so the scoreboard should be in place before the beginning of baseball season.

Last year the club provided a scoreboard for the Turf 2 multiuse field. Student athletes can also thank the Booster Club for the baseball field dugouts and a new golf cart, purchased for use in case of an injury on the field.

A Night of Comedy is the Booster Club’s biggest fundraiser. The money it earns will fund $1,000 scholarships for five graduating student athletes.

“We try to do good things for the schools and the community,” Ward said. “Dr. [Raymond] Blanch [Superintendent of Schools] is a big supporter.”

The Tuskers Booster Club currently has 155 members.

“It’s our largest enrollment ever, but it’s still not enough,” Ward said. “In some schools, membership is mandatory for parents, but not here. We’d really like to get more parents involved. Dues are only $30 a year.”

This year’s Night of Comedy will feature Johnny Lambert, known to viewers of Comedy Central and HBO, and Sherry Davey, often seen on the Today Show and recently named one of the Top 10 Comedians in New York City by Improper Magazine.

The buffet dinner at Ceola Manor will include a wide assortment of pasta, beef, chicken and vegetarian entrees, side vegetables, and salads and desserts. Complimentary beer, wine, soda and coffee are included, and a cash bar will be available. Tickets are $75 per person and still are available.

The event starts at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2 and concludes at 11:30 p.m. Sinapi’s Ceola Manor is in Jefferson Valley (GPS address: 489 E. Main St.).
