The celebration with community and business leaders will include brief remarks and tours of the new site.

In 2003, the college opened its first Extension Center in Mount Vernon, which it outgrew. That facility has been closed. The new center is 6,000-square-feet larger than the former site and it will be able to serve a larger number of students starting in the spring semester.

A short walk from City Hall, the new center is in the heart of downtown Mount Vernon and offers several features benefiting Westchester Community College students, faculty and staff. Key among them are a spacious lecture hall, an expanded Academic Support Center, a convenient Student Lounge, plus roomy classrooms and an Open Lab. Additionally, separate lounges are available for faculty and for staff. Parking will be more convenient at the new location.

The new facility will attract hundreds of traditional age college students and adult learners who will take classes at the most affordable tuition rate in the county. Financial aid and free career and transfer assistance is also available to students.

“This Center is the latest in a series of college sites which are helping the college fulfill its mission to be accessible to county residents,” says John F.M. Flynn, interim President of Westchester Community College. “For a decade, Mount Vernon residents have had their own freestanding facility with classes tailored to members of the area community. We are confident that this larger Center, designed to further the education of local residents and to propel career development, will give the city and the individuals who reside in the area a significant economic boost.”

The Center is currently offering in-person registrations, counseling and placement testing. Spring semester classes will begin on Jan. 21 in Valhalla and online, and at Extension Centers including Mount Vernon on Jan. 25. Call 914-606-7200 for additional information or go to the Mount Vernon pages on college website: www.sunywcc.edu/mountvernon.

Westchester Community College is the largest college in the county, with approximately 26,000 students enrolled annually, including those who take non-credit classes through the largest Continuing Education Division in the State University of New York system.

The 218-acre main campus is in Valhalla. In addition to the Mount Vernon Center and extensions in Ossining and Yonkers, the college also has freestanding extensions in White Plains and Peekskill.
