YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - Horace Greeleys double-digit lead had dwindled to five points midway through the third quarter and with it, Somers confidence was rising, Tuesday.
The Quakers, who had had been a little out of sync, offensively, during this mini Tuskers run, settled down. Once they did, the Quakers answered with a spurt of its own and then went to their big man -- Harrison Brown.
Brown scored his teams first eight points of the fourth quarter and Greeley was never challenged after that in a 58-46 victory over Somers in a first-round game at the 15th annual George Budries Basketball Tournament at Yorktown.
Greeley will play Dobbs Ferry in the title game, 5 p.m., Wednesday. Somers will meet Yorktown in the consolation game, 1 p.m.
Brown led all scorers with 19 points and he grabbed 12 rebounds. Brett Klein added 12 points and point guard Josh Rosen finished with seven points and seven assists. I think we took them for granted, said Brown, once his team got to a double-digit lead. Coach told us not to fall asleep. Once we hit a couple of big shots in the third quarter, we kept it going.
Horace Greeley had its lead at 14 points - 34-20 - early in the third quarter, but Somers closed to five points -- 36-31 -- lead by John Decker, who had 18 points. That was the closest Somers would get. Greeley scored eight of the next 10 points and closed the quarter with a 44-36 lead.
The fourth quarter belonged to Brown. The 6-foot-4 junior forward scored there of his four baskets on feeds from Rosen.
They had come back before so I didnt want them to come back again, Brown said.Greeleys defense suffocated Somers in the fourth, holding the Tuskers without a field goal for 5:29.
