Lakeland's Sarsen Going For 500th Field Hockey Win

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. -- Lakeland High School field hockey coach Sharon Sarsen will be going for another milestone in her legendary career Tuesday.

Sarsen will look to win her 500th field hockey game when the three-time defending New York State Class B champions play Somers High School at 6:30 p.m.

Sarsen, who became Lakeland's field hockey coach in 1982, would become the second coach in New York State with 500 field hockey wins, joining Nancy Cole of Ward Melville High School on Long Island.

The Hornets enter the game with a 12-0 record and they have outscored their opponents, 70-6.

Ironically, Somers is coached by Colleen Carney, who starred on the field hockey and girls’ lacrosse teams for Sarsen during her Lakeland career. Carney led Section 1 in scoring her senior year.

Sarsen is Section 1’s winningest field hockey coach and has guided the Hornets to a Section 1-best six state championships.
