Pleasantville Upsets Kennedy in Sectional Lacrosse

SOMERS, N.Y. -- Pleasantville boys' lacrosse continued to prove Tuesday that seeds are not always a true measure of a team’s play.

The 18th-seeded Panthers used a third-quarter surge to shock third-seeded John F. Kennedy, 15-6 ,in a Section 1 Class C Boy’s Lacrosse Championship quarterfinal-round game. The Panthers (6-13) will host No. 11 Hendrick Hudson in a semifinal Thursday. The other semifinal will be defending champion and top-seeded Bronxville playing fourth-seeded Byram Hills.

“We had seven one-goal losses this year so we knew coming in we were capable of playing well against anyone in Class C,” said senior Kyle O’Loughlin, who had a hat trick and two assists. “The tough schedule we played this season got us prepared for the big games.”

Pleasantville needed to beat Blind Brook in a play-in game in order to qualify. The Panthers followed it up with a 10-8 win over second-seeded Dobbs Ferry in a first-round game.

The Panthers came out of halftime with a 6-5 lead on the Gaels before O’Loughlin triggered a four-goal third quarter with two straight scores.

“At halftime we talked about coming out strong and not letting them back in the game,” O’Loughlin said. “We just had some mental errors in the first half that we needed to correct. We had to be more precise with our passing and catching and wanted to execute more of our offensive sets.”

Pleasantville’s defense did the job in the second half, holding Kennedy to one goal. O’Loughlin said the defense played tough in the second half.

The Panthers are enjoying their run and know it is not over yet.

“We want to take advantage of our seed and each game we play and win feels great,” O’Loughlin said.

Brendan Halloran led Pleasantville with four goals and two assists and Greg Drillock also had a hat trick and two assists.

Andrew Rodriguez had two goals and an assist for the Gaels (14-4).
