Connor Cronin, who scored 32 goals in the spring for Putnam Valley’s boys lacrosse team, will play for the U.S. Games start Wednesday and will continue through Sunday.

“I’m excited to play against people from different countries,’’ Cronin said. “It’s cool to see how much the sport has grown and see how other teams are excelling. We’re anxious to get started.”

The tournament is being played at Six Nations Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville, Ontario. Cronin earned a berth on the team through an arduous selection process. After receiving an invitation to try out, he traveled to Downington, Pa., in May with about 120 other players. The top 60 players were invited back to a four-day training session, and the top 25 players were selected for the U.S. team.

“I was surprised that I made it, because it was so competitive,’’ Cronin said, a 6-foot, 4-inch attackman. “I think the coaches like the fact I’m a big body, so I can set picks to help other people get open. I think they also saw that I have pretty good stick skills.”

The tournament features teams from 10 countries, including Canada, Denmark, Israel, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic, Iroquois and Squamish. The U.S. plays games Wednesday against Ireland and the Czech Republic.

“Playing against this competition will definitely make me a better player,’’ Cronin said. “I think it will make my stick skills better and help make me a better all-around player. These are some of the best players in the world.”

Cronin helped the Tigers finish 10-9 in the spring. Their season ended with a loss to second-seeded Pleasantville in the Section 1 Class C tournament.
