In an interview Tuesday on the "Today" show, 18-year-old Tucker West appeared with his dad, Brett, to talk about the reaction to his dad's interview Sunday on the same morning news show.
“I just want to say to all the young ladies out there, Tucker is very single,” Brett West said Sunday. "And he's a little shy, so you'll have to reach out to him." He pointed interested fans to the TeamTucker Facebook page and promised everyone a personal reply.
In an interview Tuesday with correspondent Jenna Bush Hager, Tucker said, "It's the nature of every parent to embarrass their child, and he took the cake on this one this year."
Dad Brett stood next to him, laughing. Father and son assured Hager that all was forgiven, and Brett said, "I'm just so proud of him."
Next up for West is sorting through all the social media responses and heading to Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., next month.
But West has enjoyed more than 15 minutes of fame despite the obscurity of his sport. His hometown of Ridgefield rallied behind him, even hosting a viewing party of his event on the big screen at the Ridgefield Playhouse. And the story of the family's homemade luge track gained national attention.
West finished 22nd in the men's luge Sunday, with a combined time of 3:31.217 from his four runs. He was 3.691 seconds behind the gold medalist, Felix Loch, 24, of Germany. Read more about the competition here on the Daily Voice.
