Somers Football Meets Poughkeepsie On Friday

SOMERS, N.Y. – The Somers High School football team will play in perhaps the biggest game in Section 1 so far this season when it hosts Poughkeepsie on Friday night at 7 p.m.

The matchup features what could be the two best teams in Class A this year. Both teams are 3-0 this season, average more than 35 points per game and are loaded on both sides of the ball.

The Tuskers have averaged 282 rushing yards per game and 102 passing yards per game, but Poughkeepsie’s offense is perhaps even more explosive. The Pioneers have averaged 355.5 rushing yards and 165.5 passing yards per game this season.

Somers has given up just 26 points in three games, while Poughkeepsie allowed seven points in the first two games before registering a 48-29 win against Yorktown. The Tuskers are coming off a 41-20 victory against Nyack that gave coach Tony DeMatteo his 295th career victory.

Stefano Bicknese has spearheaded Somers’ rushing attack this season and has 419 yards and seven touchdowns on just 32 carries in the first three games. He rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns in Friday’s win, and all three scores came in the first half.

D’andre Smith leads a more balanced Poughkeepsie running game with 14 carries for 310 yards and four touchdowns this season. Markel Green and Javhan Maxwell have also done their share with three and two rushing scores, respectively.

This game will likely feature plenty of scoring and may ultimately be decided by which team has the ball in the closing moments. Both teams will be hard pressed to stop their opponent’s rushing attacks and the ground game should be key to victory for either side.
