Somers Gliders Girls Win New Castle MLK Tournament

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – The Somers Gliders fifth grade girls’ basketball team was victorious Monday, winning the three-day Martin Luther King Tournament hosted by the New Castle Youth Basketball Association in Chappaqua.

The Gliders, who own a 10-1 season record, defeated host New Castle 18-4 in Saturday’s opener, dropped the Sunday second-round game to Norwalk 17-13 and defeated New Rochelle’s Ward Elementary 18-4 in round three to set up a championship final rematch against Ward, which the Gliders won 27-12. The loss to Norwalk was the Gliders first of the season.

The Gliders began the Monday title match where they left off on Sunday by pressing Ward and causing turnover after turnover.  The turnovers led to opportunistic layups and the Gliders were quickly on top.  The aggressive play continued in the second half and the Gliders developed the offense with a strong passing game.

Gabby Mazzotta was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

The Gliders, who are coached by Stacey Pittman, Mark Mazzotta and Tony Fiorino, will play the reminder of their five games at the Brewster Sports Arena.
