SOMERS, N.Y. - In their off-season, the Somers High School football players have found a new way to stay in shape: by playing the old kid's schoolyard game of dodge ball.

Stefano Bicknese, Joe Lombardo, John Decker, Joey Scambia, Chris Marasco and Joe Festo, all seniors, just won the winter dodge ball playoffs sponsored by the school's Peer Leadership group.

"After the football season, this is the next big thing we all look forward to doing," Festo said. "As juniors, this team won, and we knew we were going to do it again senior year."

The dodge ball title was as important to the Tuskers as the Section 1 Class A football championship they won this past fall.

"For the past seven years the Peer Leadership program for our school holds one dodge ball tournament," Festo said. "Only kids in our school can participate, and there are about 20 teams."

The dodge ball season included four games followed by a three-game postseason playoff.

"You have to win like three games to get in the playoffs," he said. "We won all four and three in the playoffs. We didn't lose a game - didn't even come close."

As this senior football/dodge ball team moves on after graduation, the Somers Peer Leadership Dodge Ball is wide open next year, with the league looking for a new champion.
