SOMERS. N.Y. The Eastchester and Somers football teams will meet at Somers High School Friday night at 7 p.m. with a Section 1 Class A playoff berth in the balance for each team.
Eastchester (3-3) revived its playoff hopes by defeating Nyack 9-7 last Saturday in a defensive battle on a windy day that hampered both offenses.
The Huskers (4-2) are coming off a 21-12 loss to powerhouse Poughkeepsie with their only other setback a 7-3 loss to Brewster, a team that the Eagles defeated 35-20. Both teams lost to Poughkeepsie.
Somers boasts a running game that averages 240 yards a game with Chris Silva (448 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns), Stefano Bicknese (395 yards, 4 touchdowns) and Joe Lombardo (395 yards, 4 touchdowns). Quarterback Kevin Cousins has completed 17 of 32 passes for 235 yards just to keep defense honest.
Quarterback Greg DiCarlo leads the run-first Eagles offense that features running back Rob Carinci and Jack Calbi. The Eagles have been outscored 120-109, so the defense will need a strong effort to stop the Huskers running game and keep the game close.
The low-scoring Huskers depend on a tough defense that has held opponents to 86 points, an average of 12.7 points per game. Expect this game to be low scoring with special teams and big plays determining the outcome.
