SOMERS, N.Y. -- Brian Realbuto won his second New York State Public High School wrestling title in February and added a state freestyle championship in June. Now the Somers senior has achieved the ultimate title. Realbuto won the 145-pound freestyle title at the Junior and Cadet National Championships in Fargo, N.D.
Rutgers freshman and 2011 Fox Lane graduate Steven Rodrigues finished fifth in the 135-pound weight class and Edgemonts Trey Aslanian placed eighth in the 112-pound weight class to earn all-America honors.
Its pretty cool, Realbuto said of his title. This is one of the toughest tournaments in the country. I am happy all of the hard work I put in paid off. I hope to come back next year and do it again.
Realbuto pinned Brian Murphy of Illinois with one second remaining in the second match of the final to be crowned champion, finishing with a 9-1 record. Included in Realbutos wins was one over Texas Oliver Pierce, the 2010 152-pound freestyle champ. Murphy won the first period, 1-0, forcing Realbuto to become more assertive.
I was not getting in on my shots in the first period so I had to open up in the second period, Realbuto said.
Realbuto led 3-1 before Murphy evened the score in the second period. After that, Realbuto finished off Murphy. I kept moving, saw an opportunity and jumped at it, Realbuto said. At that point, I knew it was my chance.
