SOMERS, N.Y. -- Top-seeded Somers scored twice in the final 15 minutes Friday at home to defeat fifth-seeded John Jay 4-2 and put the Tuskers in their third straight sectional championship game.
Somers is scheduled to play the Pearl River/Eastchester winner in the Section 1 Class A championship game Sunday at Yorktown High at 4 p.m.
Somers, 15-2-1, got what turned out to be the game-winner off a set piece with just under 15 minutes to play, with Ali Kalayjian booting home a pass from Melina Couzis to snap a 2-2 tie.
The momentum from the score saw the Tuskers right back in the Indians' end moments later, and Somers struck again, getting an insurance goal from Ciara Ostrander, assisted by Jessica Rodriguez.
The Tuskers, who have proven they know how to win big games, were thrilled to advance.
"This is huge for us," team captain Jenna Menta told Daily Voice. "Getting to the sectional final three years in a row is really huge for this team. We struggled a bit, lost two games - we haven't lost that many in a couple of years. But today we were down, and we came back, and it really shows we can play with a lot of heart. Today was scary, but we kept fighting back, and I think we played with more heart than we ever have, and that says something about this team."
Menta added that this year's team has grown particularly close.
"This is a feeling I'll remember for the rest of my life," she said. "I'm lucky enough to have been on the team for four years, and each year has just been so amazing. This is my favorite part of high school, and I'm so happy I get to share it with my best friends."
