SOMERS, N.Y. Somers High School senior wide receiver Joseph Festo had the best game of his career Friday night in a 41-14 win over Walter Panas.
In the first quarter, Festo had a beautiful 65-yard punt return for a touchdown in which he eluded several tacklers along the sideline. He also had a touchdown reception and two acrobatic catches in the first quarter.
The breakout quarter came in front of his family on Somers Senior Night.
Its excellent," he said. "I had family here and everything. Its just great.
The Tuskers honored their senior football players and cheerleaders with a ceremony before Friday nights game. The seniors stood on the 50-yard line with flowers for their parents as the announcer read each name.
The senior running back duo of Stefano Bicknese and Joe Lombardo also put up strong performances. Bicknese said the win was sweet for him and his fellow seniors.
Its really emotional for all of us, Bicknese said. Its our last year. We want to play well every game, and we came out and played well.
Lombardo said the atmosphere at Senior Night was just an extension of the energy at every other home game.
Our crowd always just brings a whole different factor for us, and its just amazing for them to come support us like this, Lombardo said.
Somers head coach Tony Dematteo said after the game that he drove home the significance of Senior Night during the week leading up to the game.
I told them, How do you want to be remembered? This is your last game ever on a Friday night. Theres not too many Fridays in football, Dematteo said. " 'Is that the boys of fall? How do you want to be remembered?' That was the theme of what we wanted to do tonight, how they wanted to be remembered.
