Somers Soccerfest Socks It To 'Em

SOMERS, N.Y. – Saturday saw the 26th annual Somers Region American Youth Soccer Organization Soccerfest at Reis Park in Somers.

The AYSO took over the entire park to accommodate the 53 soccer teams, which played a total of 120 games throughout the day. Visiting teams included the Tarrytown U16 Coed Team, the Croton U12 Girls Team, the Mount Pleasant U12 Girls Team and the North Salem U12 Boys Teams. U12 teams consist of fifth- and sixth-graders.

Lynn Adams Sportsmanship Awards were presented to Craig Bolotin and Mike Saraceno. Bolotin has been a dedicated AYSO volunteer, a VIP coach, third- and fourth-grade girls coach, assistant in the pre-K division, webmaster, scheduler, and member of the Saturday field setup team.

Saraceno has been responsible for AYSO coach training and certification both in Somers and throughout the area. He is also a former core coach, travel coach, trainer, setup team member and executive member of the Somers AYSO Board.

The sportsmanship award is given in honor of the late Somers resident Lynn Adams, who was a model of volunteerism and community leadership, greatly admired by friends and associates. She died of cancer in 2008.

Boy Scout Troop 228 was on hand to sell food, and the Brownies and Girl Scouts sold baked goods and ran games and crafts to raise money.

Special thanks went to the AYSO alumni who turn out year after year to help make the day a success. They include Ed Heller, Jim Caponera, Kendra Silvester, Marianne Headrick, Harold Aryee, Thilo Herda, Andy Hongell, Maria Marschke, Helen Mahood, Diane and Mark Suchanek, and the Chiribogas.

The Somers Police Department also was on hand to make sure the day ran smoothly and happily for everyone.
