Ventura, Speno, Grippi Give Fox Lane Title

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Danny Ventura had 10 days to analyze his performance in the Massapequa Wrestling tournament during Christmas break and each day he thought about it, he became more angry.

The Fox Lane senior suffered his first two losses of the season.

“I was really upset, thought about my matches and then looked at my matches and the mistakes I made,” Ventura said. “I knew I had to improve on a few things.”

Ventura returned to the Fox Lane wrestling room and worked on what he felt he needed to. As a result, Ventura tore through his three opponents to win the 132-pound weight class in the 48th annual Ted Murphy Shoreline Wrestling Classic Saturday at New Rochelle High School.

Ventura, along with champions Sam Speno (126 pounds) and Tommy Grippi (138), led Fox Lane to the team title. The Foxes finished with 189.5 points, 20 more than runner-up North Rockland.

Speno was named the most valuable wrestler. He scored a 12-0 major decision over Commack’s C.J. LaBate in the final. Grippi followed Centura with a 16-1 technical fall over Tappan Zee’s Charlie Garica. Matt Pasqualini (160) and Andriy Lypchuk (285) were both runners-up.

Ventura pinned Pine Bush’s Jordan Robles 1:34 into the match. Ventura had two other first-period pins and a technical fall.

“I was trying some different stuff because that’s what I felt I needed to do and I wanted to be more diverse,” Ventura said. “I was able to get two pins on the new moves.”

Ventura, who finished off Robles on a cradle, has been battling a chest injury. He said he thought briefly about not wrestling at Shoreline, but Ventura immediately dismissed it.

“I knew this was going to be the last chance for us, the seniors, to win this title, especially after losing by one point to Warwick last year,” Ventura said.

In a preview of what could be the Section 1 Division I 160-pound final next month, Pasqualini decisioned Hen Hud’s Phil Siegel, 8-5 in a semifinal.
