SOMERS, N.Y. – Temperatures are creeping up, but many Somers residents are still dealing with the potholes created from several late winter snowstorms.

Potholes erupt when water slips through cracks in pavement and freezes, expanding and widening the cracks to form holes, according to the New York State Department of Transportation . Asphalt cold-patch mixtures are used as a temporary fix to fill potholes in winter, and permanent pavement repairs are usually done during the warmer construction season.

Several Somers residents recently took to Facebook to complain about all of the potholes plaguing Yorktown streets. The Daily Voice reader Javier Macias said he found one big enough on Route 35 to create a flat tire.

“I think Somers should pay for it,” Macias said.

Readers pointed out Route 35, Route 202, Ridge Street, Primose Street near Reis Park and several other streets as problems around town.

Hitting a pothole can make for an uncomfortable ride as well as knock the wheels out of alignment, affect steering, damage tires and break suspension of the vehicle, according to AAA . Residents interested in reporting problem areas and potholes to the Somers Highway Department are asked to submit comments on the town’s website .
