When Kelly Kegan-McGee and Kathryn Kirton opened Fairfield Swim n' Surf 12 years ago, they were still living at home in Westchester.
Now, the two, graduates of Rye Neck High School, are married with kids and living in Connecticut-- Kegan-McGee in Fairfield and Kirton in Southbury. Not only have their families grown, their business has as well.
The women recently applied for -- and got -- a micro-enterprise assistance grant from the Fairfield Department of Community & Economic Development to help grow their Fairfield store and add a new division.
Sweat by Swim n' Surf, a curated collection of activewear brands, was launched Dec. 1, 2017, and is already -- pardon the pun -- making a splash.
"With the grant, we were able to pay for marketing to announce the launch of Sweat by Swim n Surf," said Kirton.
"We also did a casting call with local Fairfield women and picked three to be in our upcoming ad that we placed in the January issue of Fairfield Magazines Town Guide."
Best friends since growing up in Rye [Kegan-McGee] and Mamaroneck [Kirton], the women believe their key to success is knowing their market. Swim n' Surf, for example, features the latest styles and trends in athleisure and activewear, and above all, provides a comfortable setting full of friendly assistance.
"We want women and girls to feel good in what they purchase," stressed Kirton.
Custom orders and mix and match sizes are always available. The store also specializes in swim team outfitting.
"Since our opening, we've kept up with the latest developments in competitive swimming and stand out with our personalized customer service; as a result, we've acquired over 40 swim teams in the New York and Connecticut area," said Kirton.
That means, too, personalized swim team suits, banners, and caps. Items are sold year-round.
Customers will also find an array of gift items such as candles, jewelry, bags and towels.
Swim 'N Surf of Fairfield LLC is at 43 Unquowa Rd. in Fairfield; 203-292-6351; www.swimnsurf.com .
