30th Anniversary Events at the Somers Library

SOMERS, N.Y. – The Somers Library will celebrate its 30th anniversary as a public library in Reis Park on Saturday, April 14. The week leading up to the big event will feature special events as well.

Monday, April 9

• Story Walk – The Story Walk will take place all day, every day this week. Stroll through the grounds of the library and read Ezra Jack Keats’ “Over the Meadow,” then go inside for a cookie.

• Win a LEGO Building Book – Do-it-yourself activities for young engineers and architects will be available all day. Build with LEGOs and guess how much sidewalk chalk is in the giant container. The winner gets the chalk!

• Meet the Authors – 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. It’s Meet the Authors night, with coffee and tea provided by the library and pot luck dessert provided by people who attend. Meet the authors, hear about their works and listen to some short readings. A Q&A period will follow.

Tuesday, April 10

• Celebrity Readers – 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Local educational celebrities, such as principals and school district administrators, will have their chance to read aloud to a roomful of children.

Wednesday, April 11

• Healthy Cooking – 3:30 p.m. Parents, learn a little more from Mary Opfer of Mary Kate’s about conjuring up some tasty but healthy treats for your kids and yourself. Adults go to the Reading Room, children can wait under supervision in the Children’s Room.

Thursday, April 12

• Rug Hooking – 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.  Mary Parker, president of the Westchester Basketmakers Guild, whose work is on display at the library during April, will demonstrate the art of 19th-century rug hooking. You’ll get a chance to try it for yourself.

• The Lorax – 4 p.m.  See an original skit by Somers Middle School students, based on the Dr. Seuss book.

Friday, April 13

• Book Sale Sneak Preview – 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. This is an opportunity for Friends of the Library to choose books from the sale before the public comes in. If you haven’t already joined or you haven’t yet renewed your 2012 Friends membership, you can do it at the door.

Saturday, April 14

Happy Birthday, Library!
