Barbara Paesano, a teacher in the North Salem School District, will be participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer on May 17-18 in Boston. Paesano is a breast cancer survivor.

Paesano and her team, Saving Our Sisters, will be walking the equivalent of 1.5 marathons over the two days. Each participant is required to raise $1,800, with the money going to research and helping those who have breast cancer. Paesano has been participating in the walk for five years.

"As a 15-year survivor, I appreciate how fortunate I am and I'd like to help others," Paesano said. "I want to help more people survive breast cancer."

Paesano said participating in the walk was an amazing experience.

"It's difficult to describe," Paesano said. "You get to meet and talk with lots of people. Everyone has their own story. You run into people who were just diagnosed and I feel I can give them hope because 15 years later, I am as healthy as can be."

Raising money has become easier as Paesano has built her base of supporters and she said she is looking to raise at least $2,000 this year. The team is currently looking for sponsors to help finance the cost of participating in the walk. All sponsors will have their name listed on team shirts.

Paesano said she can always count on the North Salem community to support her.

"I can always count on local neighbors, friends and colleagues," Paesano said. "121 Restaurant in North Salem has always been a major sponsor."

Developments like Angelina Jolie's announcement she had a preventative double mastectomy has helped raise further awareness for breast cancer, Paesano said.
