Somers Dog Park: A Fundraiser for Fun

SOMERS, N.Y. – The canines of Somers can thank Dr. Andrew Frishman and his crew at the Progressive Animal Hospital for organizing a dog park fundraiser for Saturday at the Lovell Street Grill & Alehouse .

The Lovell Street Grill’s daytime bar manager, Jessica Allen (two English bulldogs, Teddy and Shelby), said the restaurant will donate 10 percent of the entire day’s proceeds to the dog park fund. General manager Nick DeVito (American bulldog, Facizul, translation: ugly face) said the whole staff is looking forward to it.

The evening’s music will be provided by Robin and the Hoods , a classic rock band specializing in covering such groups as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. The band is led by Robin Newhook (Shetland sheepdog, Vinny, 13, and long-haired Chihuahua, Scooter, 5). Other band members are Rich Newhook on guitar, Bill Neary on bass and Tim Vanderberg on drums.

Frishman’s wife, Debbie (wheaten terrier, Bosco), has been busy collecting sponsors and raffle donations for the event. Some of the contributors are Somers Custom Framing, Groomingdale’s, Patsy’s Pizza & Pasta, Fratelli’s, Sweet Delights, Aunt B’s Yogurt Bar, Somers Wine & Spirits and Luke’s Hair Salon. Appliance Sales Plus is donating the grand prize of a 19-inch color TV.

Andrew Frishman himself (all creatures great and small) has been practicing his saxophone so that he can sit in on a few numbers with Robin and the Hoods.

The Lovell Street Grill & Alehouse serves a family-oriented menu at family-oriented prices. It is at 152 Route 202 (Lovell Street), Lincolndale.

The Progressive Animal Hospital is at 149 Lovell St. in Lincolndale. Frishman specializes in a combination of modern and holistic medicine, including Chinese herbs and acupuncture.

In other news of the dog park, a small ceremony will be held on May 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the proposed site (Route 100 between Mamma Rosa’s Restaurant and the Somers Highway Garage), in grateful receipt of a $4,000 contribution, made in memory of a beloved dog. The small area of the park will be named in the animal’s honor.
