SOMERS, N.Y. -- More than a dozen gathered in downtown Somers on Tuesday night for a Hanukkah celebration in front of the Elephant Hotel.
The celebration, which included various songs and gelt being offered, culminated in a menorah lighting.
Somers resident Scott Meshil got to light the shamash, which is the center candle of the menorah and lasts for the duration of the eight-day holiday. Fellow Somers resident Jim Laredo got to light the first nightly candle.
Rabbi Yehuda Heber, who is with the local group Chabad of Yorktown and Somers, delivered remarks for the celebration.
The menorah is next to the town's Christmas tree, which had its own celebration and lighting on Dec. 7.
