The winter of 2012 saw the birth of the Somers Litter Task Force, a committee of concerned citizens, led by Suzy Moravick and Linda Simpson, who took on the responsibility of organizing campaigns to neaten the town’s streets and highways.
Later in the year, after the task force had been in operation for six months, Somers High School senior, Anna Gemo was named the winner of a contest to design a graphic anti-litter sign.
The sign, featuring a tidy elephant, can now be seen in various spots around town. Thanks to the task force, Somers’ litter is no longer so visible.
