SOMERS, N.Y. -- Somers High School Principal Mark Bayer participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge toward the end of the school's assembly for the new school year. Students were involved in preparing for the soaking.

For Bayer, taking the challenge was a sudden act and was not intended in advance. Speaking after being drenched, Bayer said he knew that something was planned but added that he did not know what it was.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has made headlines in recent weeks, as it has spread via social media. The Ice Bucket Challenge involves people spreading awareness of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) by dumping icy water on themselves, according to the ALS Association, a group that promotes awareness of the disease.

The ALS Association also announced that it has received more than $100 million in donations due to the challenge.

Bayer's participation came after he made remarks to the student body about social media usage. He spoke about the Ice Bucket Challenge as a positive example while cautioning students to be careful about what they post. Laying out rules to abide by, Bayer also told students to respect themselves, respect the place (referring to the school building) and to take care of each other. The principal also encouraged students to find what they are interested in and to research it.

Wesley Cash, president of the high school's student council, gave remarks before his fellow students. His remarks included offering advice to freshmen – he mentioned reaching out to staff as an example – and discussed what being a Tusker means to him. Cash also talked about upcoming events, such as a bonfire and a pep rally.
