In an effort to improve traffic flow and increase safety on a busy Westchester roadway, crews have undertaken a multi-million dollar project on Route 100C.

New York State Department of Transportation officials announced on Monday the kickoff a $13.9 million project to remove and replace the bridge carrying Route 100C over Route 9A.

A new roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Route 100C, the Route 9A southbound ramp and the Old Saw Mill River Road in Greenburgh and Mount Pleasant.

According to officials, “replacing the bridge and constructing a new roundabout will improve efficiency and enhance safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians along Route 100C, a significant link in the transportation network of the west-central portion of Westchester County.”

NYSDOT officials noted that the route serves travelers heading to Westchester Community College, Westchester Medical Center, NY Medical College, Blythedale Children's Hospital, and several Westchester County facilities.

Originally built in 1936, the current bridge is an arched concrete, three-span structure with two travel lanes and one turning lane. It will be replaced with a steel multi-girder bridge that will have two travel lanes, one turning lane, two ten-foot wide shoulders and five-foot wide sidewalks on both sides of the bridge.

The bulk of the construction work - which will involve the closure of the Route 100C bridge and an onsite detour for Route 9A, is set to begin next spring. Until then, officials will be preparing the site, and doing survey and utility work, which will last through the fall.

“I am pleased the New York State Department of Transportation is taking action to make the Route 100C and Route 9A intersection safer for pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicles alike,” Congresswoman Nita Lowey said in a statement. “These much-needed improvements should also significantly help the traffic flow at this busy transportation link.”

Acting NYSDOT Commissioner Paul Karas said that, “the replacement of this bridge and construction of a new roundabout in this location will both enhance safety and improve the flow of traffic at a location that provides an important connection to major employers, medical facilities and higher education institutions.”
